Most of New York's first four hundred years happened within a mile of our front door. Here's what to do with that.
South Street Seaport | 6 minutes
Cobblestones, nineteenth-century counting houses, and tall ships still tied up at the pier. The Seaport was New York's working waterfront for two centuries and it still feels like it, in the good way. The Tin Building, the old Fulton Fish Market reborn as a Jean-Georges food hall, runs from morning through late. Pier 17's rooftop hosts concerts through the summer and a skating rink in winter. Come at golden hour for the light on the water and the Brooklyn Bridge in profile.
The Brooklyn Bridge | 10 minutes to the pedestrian entrance
The walk across takes about half an hour and it never stops being worth it. Go early, before eight, if you want the promenade mostly to yourself. Go at dusk if you'd rather have the skyline lit behind you. The entrance is on Park Row near City Hall.
The Elevated Acre | 8 minutes
An acre of lawn and boardwalk hidden one flight above Water Street, behind an unmarked escalator at number 55. Harbor views, almost nobody there. The kind of place you tell people about carefully.
9/11 Memorial & Museum | 10 minutes
Two reflecting pools set in the footprints of the towers, honoring the 2,983 lives lost in 2001 and 1993. The memorial plaza is free and open daily. The museum below requires a ticket and takes two to three hours. Note that 2026 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary; the plaza and museum close to the public on September 11 for the private family commemoration
One World Trade Center | 11 minutes
The tallest building in the hemisphere, 1,776 feet to the tip. One World Observatory sits on floors 100 through 102, and the elevator ride up is its own short piece of theater. Clear days give you sixty miles in every direction. Book ahead.
The Oculus | 8 minutes
Santiago Calatrava's transit hall, all white ribs and daylight, sitting where a train station has no business being this beautiful. It's a mall and a subway station and, unavoidably, a building people stop walking to look at. Free, open, and two minutes from the memorial.
Wall Street | 8 minutes
Eight blocks that have moved more money than anywhere on earth, and they are narrower than you expect. The New York Stock Exchange sits at Broad and Wall behind its Corinthian columns. Come on a weekend morning if you'd rather see the architecture than the crowds.
Federal Hall | 8 minutes
Where Washington took the oath of office in 1789 and the first Congress met. The building you see is the 1842 replacement, a Greek Revival temple with Washington in bronze on the steps. Free to enter.
Trinity Church | 10 minutes
Gothic Revival spire that was the tallest thing in New York for most of the nineteenth century. Alexander Hamilton is buried in the churchyard, and has been getting considerably more visitors since 2015.
St. Paul's Chapel | 6 minutes
Manhattan's oldest surviving church building, finished in 1766. Washington worshipped here. It stood untouched across the street from the towers on September 11 and served as a relief center for eight months afterward.
Stone Street | 9 minutes
One narrow cobblestone block, closed to cars, lined with restaurants that put tables in the street from spring through fall. It was the first paved street in New Amsterdam. Loud, communal, and the best low-effort dinner within walking distance.
Charging Bull & Fearless Girl | 12 minutes

Woolworth Building | 8 minutes
The 1913 "Cathedral of Commerce," terra cotta and Gothic detail sixty stories up. The lobby mosaics are extraordinary and viewable by guided tour only.
Battery Park | 16 minutes
Twenty-five acres at the southern tip of the island, where the Hudson meets the East River. Castle Clinton, the 1811 fort in the middle of it, has been a fort, an opera house, an aquarium, and now a ticket office. The harbor views are the real draw
Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island | 18 minutes to the ferry, then a 15-minute sail
Statue City Cruises is the only authorized ferry, departing from behind Castle Clinton in Battery Park. Every ticket includes both islands, and the boat goes to Liberty first, then Ellis, then home. Book ahead, allow the better part of a day, and take an early departure if you want both islands properly. Pedestal and crown access require separate tickets, months in advance.
The Staten Island Ferry | 17 minutes to Whitehall Terminal
Free, every thirty minutes, twenty-five minutes each way. It passes close enough to the Statue of Liberty for the view without the ticket. Stand on the right side heading out. New Yorkers use it to commute and visitors use it as the best free thing in the city; both are correct.
Governors Island | 17 minutes to the Battery Maritime Building
An eight-minute ferry to 172 car-free acres of parkland, historic officers' housing, art installations, and hammocks. Open seasonally. Bring a picnic and stay longer than you planned.
