September 11, 2026: 25th Anniversary Planning

The 25th anniversary falls on a Friday this year. Given the milestone year, expect significantly heavier security, larger crowds, more dignitaries, and a wider footprint of closures than a typical anniversary. Official 2026 street closures will be announced by NYPD/DOT in early September; historical patterns are documented below. 

Key Events & Memorials

Friday, September 11 (Anniversary Day)

• 25th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony, 9/11 Memorial Plaza (WTC site). Begins around 8:30 AM with the reading of the names by family members. Seven moments of silence this year (the times each tower was struck and fell, the Pentagon, Flight 93, and a seventh honoring those lost to 9/11-related illness). Private ceremony for families and invited officials; not open to the public. Livestreamed. Historically the Memorial plaza reopens to the public around 3 PM, and the Museum stays closed to the public all day for private family visits. Expect a heavy dignitary presence given the milestone year.
• Tribute in Light. The twin beams return at dusk and shine until dawn, visible up to 60 miles away. Draws large evening crowds to Lower Manhattan viewing spots, including the Seaport and Brooklyn Bridge area near us.
• FDNY Firefighters Memorial Ceremony, Riverside Drive and West 100th Street. Honors the 343 FDNY members lost.
• FDNY Ten House, 124 Liberty Street (directly across from the WTC site). Open to the public throughout the day for those paying respects.
• Yankees home game with pregame 9/11 ceremony, Yankee Stadium. Ceremony 6:30 PM, first pitch 7:05 PM, part of a Subway Series vs. the Mets running September 11 to 13.
• 9/11 Day of Service. The nonprofit 9/11 Day is organizing its largest-ever national day of service for the 25th, including a flagship meal-packing event at Citi Field with MLB and the Mets ahead of the Subway Series game.
• Landmarks illuminated in blue citywide at night as part of the annual tribute.

Days Leading Up

• Sunday, September 6: Father Mychal Judge Memorial, West 31st Street and Seventh Avenue. Honors the FDNY chaplain killed at the WTC.
• Wednesday, September 9: FDNY's official 25th anniversary ceremony at FerryHawks Stadium (Staten Island University Hospital Community Park). Private event for FDNY families.
• Thursday, September 10, 10 AM to 2 PM: Open houses at participating FDNY firehouses and EMS stations citywide.
• Thursday, September 10, 6 PM: Candlelight vigil at the Brooklyn Wall of Remembrance, Maimonides Park, Coney Island.

Later in September & Throughout 2026

• Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk (typically the last Sunday of September; confirm 2026 date). The route runs through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and finishes in Lower Manhattan near the WTC. Historically one of the largest closure events of the year downtown, separate from the anniversary itself. Worth its own advisory for guests that weekend.
• Steel Across America (Tunnel to Towers): a WTC steel beam touring the country May through September 2026.
• 9/11 Memorial & Museum 25th anniversary public program series running throughout 2026: panels, conversations, and performances examining the quarter-century since the attacks.
• FDNY yearlong commemoration: new 25th anniversary emblem, a department film about Father Mychal Judge, a commemorative podcast series hosted by Gary Sinise, and the 25th Anniversary Health Report.

Street Closures & Transit

2026-specific closures have not been announced yet. NYPD and DOT typically publish the official advisory in the first week of September. The pattern below has held consistently in recent years and should be treated as the baseline; expect the 25th to be the same or larger.

Typical Closure Pattern (based on 2019 to 2025)

• Core frozen zone, roughly midnight to mid-afternoon on 9/11: all streets bounded by Barclay Street (north), Broadway (east), Battery Place / Rector Street (south), and West Street (west), closed at NYPD discretion. In some years the advisory has extended the southern boundary to Battery Place with the full box "all inclusive."
• Additional closures west of the site: Liberty Street, Albany Street, and West Thames Street between West Street and South End Avenue; South End Avenue between Liberty and West Thames; Little West Street between West Thames and Battery Place.
• No parking on closed streets; vehicles are towed. A construction freeze in the area has also been imposed in recent years.
• Subway: the 1 train has historically skipped WTC Cortlandt in both directions from roughly 5:45 AM to 3 PM. Rector Street and Chambers Street are the advised alternates. Expect crowding at Fulton Street, our closest hub.
• Detours: traffic exiting the Brooklyn Battery (Hugh L. Carey) Tunnel is rerouted; expect delays on West Street, Trinity Place/Church Street, and the FDR approaches all morning.

What This Means for 5 Platt Street

• We sit just east of the typical frozen zone (east of Broadway), so the hotel itself should remain accessible, but vehicle approaches from the west and south will be badly constrained from the early morning through at least mid-afternoon.
• Advise arriving guests to approach from the east via the FDR / Pearl Street or Water Street rather than West Street or Broadway.
• Airport transfers, deliveries, and any vendor load-ins on September 11 should be scheduled before 6 AM or after 4 PM, and ideally moved to another day entirely.
• Expect heavy pedestrian traffic all day and into the night (Tribute in Light draws evening crowds toward the waterfront and Seaport).
• September 11 is a Friday, so anniversary crowds will flow directly into normal weekend leisure traffic; the whole September 11 to 13 window should be treated as a high-traffic weekend.

Operational & Guest Communication Notes

• Tone: any guest-facing communication about the anniversary should be purely practical and respectful. Logistics only. No marketing language, no promotion tied to the anniversary in any form.
• Pre-arrival note: draft a short pre-arrival email for guests staying September 10 to 12 covering closures, transit, and quiet-hours awareness near the Memorial. Send once official closures are confirmed.
• Front desk briefing sheet: one-pager with ceremony timing, plaza reopening time, closure map, subway changes, and respectful guidance for guests asking about visiting the Memorial (plaza opens to the public in the afternoon; the Museum is closed to the public that day).
• Staffing: consider added lobby and door coverage September 10 to 12 for wayfinding questions and arrival congestion.
• Wonderful: anticipate higher walk-in volume, especially in the evening around Tribute in Light. Keep programming understated that week.
• To confirm as September approaches: official NYPD/DOT closure advisory (early September), MTA service changes, Tunnel to Towers 2026 run date, and whether the milestone year expands the frozen zone.
